The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Germany reported 24,300 new infections for Thursday. The seven-day incidence thus rises to 134.2, up from 113.3 a week ago. German intensive care physicians are sounding the alarm about the high infection figures. They say an additional 1,000 intensive care patients have ended up in hospitals since mid-March. If this rate continues, they say, they will be at capacity in less than four weeks.
That’s what the scientific director of the Divi intensive care registry, Christian Karagiannidis, told the newspaper “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition). First discovered in the United Kingdom, the highly contagious corona variant B.1.1.7 has reached 88 percent in Germany. The spread of the variant is worrying because “according to previous findings, it is significantly more contagious and probably causes more severe courses of the disease than other variants,” the Robert Koch Institute said. In Austria, the mutation percentage is 84 percent, which is similarly high.
According to the RKI, other virus variants play hardly any role in Germany at present: the variant B.1.351, which is widespread in South Africa, was detected in 0.8 percent of the positive samples tested for it, and the variant P.1, which circulates strongly in Brazil, was detected in only 0.1 percent.
